Projects
Our Largest Trail Project
Our long term plan was to establish a trail from the Bennett Bridge to Peachland which was visioned by the Regional District to be called Trail 2000. Sections of this trail had been completed in 2002 and 2003 from Gellatly Bay along Boucherie and Pritchard Roads. In 2010 we started planning the route from Peachland along Drought Rd and below Hwy 97 through an old orchard to Seclusion Bay Rd. The trail would follow the right of way for Hwy 97 and avoid any private property easements. GBTAPS retained the engineering firms both Civil and Geotechnical to complete the design drawings to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Standards as the entire trail was on their Right of Way for Hwy 97. The Project was tendered by the District of Peachland after they received both Federal and Provincial grants from the Active Transportation Funds to cover the cost for the construction. The construction contract was awarded last fall and work continued through the winter to completion in May 2025. This multi-use trail is now completed and opened to the public on May 17th 2025 with the official opening is June 20th at the talking circle which is a viewpoint along the trail. The route is part of the Trail of the Okanagan from Osoyoos to Sicamous which will connect with the Fur Brigade Trail from Summerland and the Kelowna to Vernon Rail Trail.
“This multiuse trail starts at the south exit from the tunnel under Hwy 97 on Seclusion Bay Rd.
It was constructed just below Hwy 97 on MOTI right of way to Drought Rd which continues down this road to our new multiuse trail leading to Robinson Place in Peachland. Unfortunately, the Engineer changed the specifications to place 3/4″ crush gravel instead of 3/8″ crusher chips on the top 4 inches of trail wearing surface. This created a huge problem on the trail during the 2025 – 2026 fall and winter, as the public walked or cycled over loose rock that had migrated to the surface due to the torque from the bicycles’ rear wheels. To solve this problem we had the contractor return in May 2026 to hand rake all the loose rock off the trail, then water and recompact the surface to an acceptable riding and walking condition.
The Regional District will now complete the remainder of this trail to West Kelowna by constructing a new multiuse trail through Goats Peak Regional Park to the Regional Heritage Park on Gellatly Road S in 2027. Note the following pictures of the trail’s construction:”
