Gellatly Bay Waterfront Improvements

Glen Canyon Regional Park

Our first long term plan after the waterfront improvements was to complete the trails up through Glen Canyon Regional Park along Powers Creek. The following slides show the first set of stairways built in Lower Glen Canyon Regional Park 1999 to 2001

Trail 2000

Our second long term vision was to establish a trail from the Bennett Bridge through to Peachland known as Trail 2000 (now called the Westside Trail). Sections that had been completed by 2003 were along Boucherie Rd from Rotary Beach Park to Pritchard Rd along Old Boucherie Rd. Much planning and engineering have been completed on the section from Whitworth Rd through Goats Peak Regional Park to Drought Rd into Peachland over the past 10 years. See the location of the trail below in Planned Trail Projects.

Cindy Road Trail

A very important trail linking the Westbank Town Center with the foreshore has been completed and is in active use. The trail runs from the south end of Old Okanagan Highway down to Cindy Road, and from there to Angus Drive and on to the foreshore.

Brown Road Bridge

When the Regional District purchased the additional property for Glen Canyon Park off Brown Road in 2013, they required a bridge across Powers Creek. GBTAPS located a used steel truss bridge rebuilt the deck and installed it on the site foundations.

Lower and Mid Glen Canyon Regional Park

Up to 2013 there was no access through Glen Canyon downstream from the Acorn Bridge through a 10 meter wide easement through private property. The original trail had been eroded away by Powers Creek and overgrown with vegetation. GBTAPS volunteered to construct the new trail through this easement plus improve the remainder of the trail from the new stairways in the lower Park up through and above the Acorn Bridge. Work completed from 2013 to 2020. The new crib stair entrance to the Upper Glen Canyon Regional Park off Lower Glenrosa Rd was completed in 2021.

Planned Trail Projects

Our long term plan was to establish a trail from the Bennett Bridge to Peachland which was visioned by the Regional District to be called Trail 2000. Sections of this trail had been completed in 2002 and 2003 from Gellatly Bay along Boucherie and Pritchard Roads. In 2010 we started planning the route from Peachland along Drought Rd and below Hwy 97 through an old orchard to Seclusion Bay Rd. The trail would follow the right of way for Hwy 97 and avoid any private property easements. Currently, engineering is being completed on this 2.2 km route to the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure satisfaction for permits to construct this 3 meter wide multi use trail. The route is part of the Trail of the Okanagan from Osoyoos to Sicamous which will connect with the Fur Brigade Trail from Summerland and the Kelowna to Vernon Rail Trail. The following maps shows the route from Buchanan Rd in Peachland to Seclusion Bay Rd in West Kelowna, then on through Goats Peak Park to Gellatly Rd South through the Regional District Heritage Park.
